Inexperience

In a perfect world, everyone who runs a business would have copious amounts of experience, especially within the sector they hope to be successful.  They would then be able to apply this experience to their own enterprise. Of course, this is often not the case, as those with limited experience either in the field their business operates in or overall. Indeed, such people can still be incredibly successful if they are smart and use the resources that are available to help them.

One such resource is that of a mentor. This is because even inexperienced business owners can learn from the understanding of a mentor who has already taken a similar path. In fact, in this way, newer business owners truly get to stand on the shoulders of giants because they get to learn important lessons from their mentor’s experience without losing things like money, time or reputation.

Of course, for this type of mentor mentee rekatonhsip to work, the latter needs to remain as open as possible to what the former is providing. That means they have to be teachable, and willing to learn from the mentor’s previous expeinc,e if they wish to avoid the same types of problems.

Business growth has stalled

Mentors can also be brilliant at helping businesses when their growth has stalled. Hitting a growth ceiling is a common occurrence for businesses as they expand, and it occurs when they encounter obstacles to effective expansion, such as a lack of scalability, production bottle necks, or even hard to crack international markets.

The good news is that a mentor will be able to help a business work through these issues and help get growth moving again. They can do this in many ways, including offering their experience of similar situations and what they have done to break out of the status quo. Additionally, being able to discuss the problem with someone in the know can stimulate the synthesis of novel ideas that may not have been used before, but could still be very effective in helping things move forward.

Isolation of those in a leadership position

They do say that it’s lonely at the top, and this is an experience that many leaders feel. Indeed, it can feel very lonely when you bear all the ultimate responsibility for the success or failure of a project or company, and you can’t share your doubts or fears with those under you.

Happily, a mentor can provide the perfect release for these doubts and fears, and confirm to you that you are not alone in feeling them. This can be particularly helpful when we find a mentor that is similar to ourselves in gender, ethnicity, or background as it helps to make an instant connection. It also reminds leaders that their concerns are not only valid but can be talked through, making them easier to navigate and lessening stress and isolation at the same time.

Skill gaps

Are you or members of your team missing essential skills needed to successfully operate your business? Your first thought here may be to work with a training company to improve these. Yet, there are some things you may find hard to find on a syllabus taught by a training company. Things like  how to manage your specific team effectively, or how to better allocate finances for business success.

The good news is that mentors can provide an excellent option for real-world learning that can be tailored specifically to your business’s needs. But where will you find such mentors? One option is to work with a mentor site that connects those who want mentoring with those who offer it, and you will find some for industries such as design.

Another option is to use things like outsourced accounting services that can provide you with access to a high level accounting professional. Indeed, a professional such as a chief financial office may can be ideally experienced to help mentor and improve your financial team.

Limited opportunities

Sometimes a business fails because it does not have enough access to opportunities for success and growth. These opportunities tend to come from those in your network, and if you have a small network it can severely damage you ability to thrive.

Since a mentor will be well established in their field, they should have a wide network with lots o genuine connections built over time. This means that an introduction from them can be very valuable indeed, because it is meaningful and respected.

Strategy mistakes

Business success does not appear spontaneously. Instead, it is a culmination of making the right choices at the right time. In other words, to be successful in business, you have to have a strong strategy to guide you, and a mentor can help you a great deal with this.

This is because a mentor will be able to provide you with that unique mix of experience and objectivity that you need to identify the areas in which you business strategy is poor. For example, they may help you recognise that you pricing strategy is off and its causing you to loose customers. They may then be able to help you by suggesting a different pricing strategy that they have seen work successfully in the industry.

The bets thing is that as well as offering a new approach, a mentor may be able to provide you insightful and valuable tips on how to execute successful in your specific business as well.
